چکیده

‘Drought-proofing’ Australia is a concept that fires the imagination of the Australian people, particularly during severe drought. One recurring suggestion to achieve this aim is to form a large water expanse in central Australia, with the assumption that moisture evaporating from such an expanse would later precipitate over agricultural regions in eastern Australia. This premise then opens the debate as to whether such a large water expanse would actually modify Australia’s rainfall regime. This question has been asked before, and as reported in Warren (1945) the usual conclusion has been that there would be minimal change. There are now longer data records than Aust. Met. Impact of land cover change on the climate of southwest Western Australia

[1] A sudden reduction in rainfall occurred in the southwest of Western Australia in the mid-20th century. This reduced inflows to the Perth water supply by about 120 GL (42%) and led to an acceleration of projects to develop new water sources at a cost of about $300 million. The reduction in rainfall was coincident with warmer temperatures. A major analysis of these changes indicated that the ...

Influence of rainfall and water level on inland fisheries production: A review

Variation and shift in the seasonal pattern of the hydro-climatic factors is probably because of climate related changes. Rainfall, river inflow, snowmelt, and consequent fluctuation in water level are the hydro-climatic factors that influence the inland fisheries production worldwide. Increase in rainfall and water level favours the reproduction, recruitment and immigration of fish in the inla...

Different responses of Ross River virus to climate variability between coastline and inland cities in Queensland, Australia.

AIMS To examine the potential impact of climate variability on the transmission of Ross River virus (RRv) infection, and to assess the difference in the potential predictors of RRv incidence in coastline and inland regions, Queensland, Australia. METHODS Information on the RRv cases notified between 1985 to 1996 was obtained from the Queensland Department of Health. Climate and population dat...

Climate change effects on wheat yield and water use in oasis cropland

Agriculture of the inland arid region in Xinjiang depends on irrigation, which forms oasis of Northwest China. The production and water use of wheat, a dominant crop there, is significantly affected by undergoing climate variability and change. The objective of this study is to quantify inter-annual variability of wheat yield and water use from 1955 to 2006. The farming systems model APSIM (Agr...

Microbial quality of tropical inland waters and effects of rainfall events.

Novel markers of fecal pollution in tropical waters are needed since conventional methods recommended for other geographical regions may not apply. To address this, the prevalence of thermotolerant coliforms, enterococci, coliphages, and enterophages was determined by culture methods across a watershed. Additionally, human-, chicken-, and cattle-specific PCR assays were used to identify potenti...
